Thomaston enjoys a very large historic district with beautiful homes from the period of 1790 to the late 1800s. Almost all of the buildings remain private residences. The business section of the village has stayed much the way it appeared in the mid 1800s with the exteriors of the buildings reflecting the general design of the historic retail shops and the interiors having been modernized for efficiency and convenience. The end result is very pleasing to the eye and the variety of businesses allows one to do a good deal of necessary shopping right in town. Although the village has retained much of its past, for the size of its population (approximately 3,000 residents) it has an astonishing number of banks (2), museums (4), antique shops (4)  theater companies (2), and a host of other cultural groups.

This house, now a private residence, began life as Hastings Tavern, a popular gathering
place and guest house for travelers. Built in 1800, it is the only brick home in the town.
