About the House Where else could you find a house built for a successful sea captain by noted architect James Overlook, situated on a hill overlooking the site of that captain’s former shipyard, from which was launched one of Thomaston’s largest ships that just happened to be under the command of that captain’s first born son? The Captain Alfred Watts House, 14 Elliot Street, Thomaston, ME is the featured house for the Thomaston Historical Society’s 2018 Annual Summer House Tour. Its architecture and its family history tell the story of Thomaston, Maine. Built in the Greek Revival style in 1848 the house features a wide frieze under the cornice, embellished by corner pilasters, flush board siding and a side piazza. The side entry keeps traffic flow from the main part of the house and the owners have lovingly filled this spacious, light-filled home with a treasure trove of antiques, creating peaceful and welcoming spaces. The attached barn to the rear of the property has been turned into an entertainment area with lovely views of the Georges river. And gardens outline the property. |
